Innovative solutions are being developed to improve the chemistry, density, reliability, size and cost of batteries, as demand has grown exponentially across the globe for use in vehicle electrification, energy storage systems, consumer electronics, and other applications. Collaboration between manufacturers, entrepreneurs, startups, academia, and government R&D will help drive innovation to accelerate battery production.

NanoGraf has developed a novel high energy density Si-based anode material that has the long-term potential to replace graphite-based anodes in lithium-ion batteries for a range of applications, from consumer electronics to electric vehicles. Our anode materials utilize a low cost manufacturing process that has been proven at the multi-ton scale in Japan and drop in to

existing electrode mixing and coating equipment. Commercial-ready cells have already been validated in large scale battery manufacturing facilities, and we have partnered with some of the world's best-selling brands to power the next generation of electrified products.

Volexion has developed drop-in conformal pristine graphene coating, protecting Li-ion battery cathode materials and driving game-changing improvements (2x cycle life, 5-10x rate capability, voltage range extension, low temperature performance and safety enhancement). Volexion further stabilizes and enables Ni-rich, high energy cathode materials, increasing energy density 35% and reducing cost 30%, while only adding 1-2% to cell costs. Developed at Northwestern University by MacArthur fellow Pr. Mark Hersam, scaled-up at Argonne National Lab, Volexion received DoE’s Ten@Ten award in 2019 and is experiencing strong industry interest and traction from major battery players.

Ateios’ platform technology is a novel manufacturing process for highly customizable and flexible batteries that can be enabled in flexible electronics such as smart textiles, soft robotics, Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, and medical/fitness-based wearable patches. The Enercalm design is engineered for high energy density of over 810 mAh/g using a common chemistry applied to high-performance applications such as pacemakers and soldier battery packs, providing nearly 4x energy density compared to existing primary Li-MnO2 chemistry. The technology is extremely adapted to any device’s power and manufacturing process due to Ateios’ innovative RAPIDCURE technology that allows these batteries to be manufactured nearly 10x roll to roll speed compared to traditional battery manufacturing.
